Edward A. Burkhardt, Chairman of the Board
Edward A. Burkhardt is the CEO and President of Rail World, Inc., a rail management company which actively participates in the management of Montreal, Maine & Atlantic. He is President of San Luis Central Railroad and Chairman of Estonian Railways. He also is Chairman of Baltic Rail Services, which purchased 66% of the outstanding shares of the Estonian Railways Ltd. on August 31, 2001, and President of Rail Polska, sp.z o.o., a significant rail operator in Poland.
As the founding President, Chairman and CEO of the Wisconsin Central Railroad, Mr. Burkhardt was responsible for developing WC into America’s most successful regional railway. Additionally, he pioneered the global participation of US companies in rail privatizations, expanding the worldwide operations of WC to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom between 1987 and July 1999. Wisconsin Central increased its revenues fourfold during this period of Mr. Burkhardt’s stewardship, and managed a highly successful IPO in 1991.
Prior to establishing Wisconsin Central, Mr. Burkhardt spent 20 years in senior management positions with Chicago & North Western Railroad, serving successively as Vice President Marketing and Vice President Operations. He holds an Honors degree in Industrial Administration from Yale University.
He serves as a director of two publicly traded companies, Valeant Pharmaceuticals International and PolyMedica Corporation, and is a board member of the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway, a regional carrier serving Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Robert C. Grindrod, President and CEO
Mr. Grindrod began his career in the rail industry as a management trainee with the B&O/C&O Railroads (now a component of CSX Transportation) in 1971. He served in several locations as Trainmaster, Manager – Car Distribution, and Manager – Equipment Utilization. In 1977, he joined the Chicago & North Western Railroad, and served variously as Senior System Safety Officer, Assistant Division Manager – Administration, Director of Equipment Management, and Assistant Division Manager – Transportation.
In 1987, he joined the team which planned and founded the Wisconsin Central Railroad. In his official position as Assistant Vice President – Equipment Management, he assembled its entire freight car fleet of 14,000 cars. He also participated in several other functional areas, such as operations planning and market development.
Mr. Grindrod was seconded to the English, Welsh & Scottish Railway in the United Kingdom for an extended period in 2001 to reorganize the freight cars operations of that carrier. He served as a director of Allied Leasing Corporation, a consortium which purchased the bulk of the rail assets of Chrysler Leasing Corporation.
Mr. Grindrod holds a B.A. degree in History from Drew University.
M. Donald Gardner, Jr., Vice President of Finance and Administration & CFO
Mr. Gardner joins MMA from Maine Drilling & Blasting, Inc. in Gardiner, Maine, where he served as Chief Financial Officer since 2005. From 2001 to 2005, he was Vice President Operations and CFO at Kazmaier Associates and S/R Industries, Inc., Huntington Beach, CA and Concord, MA. His affiliation with Kazmaier began in 1980, advancing to Vice President and CFO. He subsequently was principal at Gardner Associates, Needham, MA from 1991 to 1993, when he became Chief Operating Officer at Genalco, Inc., Needham, MA, holding that post until rejoining Kazmaier in 2001.
Mr. Gardner holds an M.B.A., Finance Concentration from Boston College School of Management and a B.A., Economics from the University of New Hampshire. His professional affiliations include Financial Executives International and the Construction Financial Management Association.
Stephen T. Greene, Vice President Mechanical
Mr. Greene has 18 years of locomotive maintenance experience, and began his career at GE in 1970. He subsequently held positions with GE as Technical Director and Field Service Representative at Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1994, he advanced to Process Technical Advisor at GE's Locomotive Manufacturing Plant at Erie, Pennsylvania. Mr. Greene joined the Union Pacific Railroad in 1998 as Manager of Locomotive Maintenance at Little Rock, Arkansas then Roseville, California. In 2003, he became Mechanical Superintendent for the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) at Oakland, California. Prior to joining MMA, he was most recently with OmniTRAX, where he functioned as Service Area Coordinator for the Houston, Texas region.
Joseph R. McGonigle, Vice President Marketing
Mr. McGonigle has 35 years of transportation experience that includes extensive knowledge of the paper industry and specific proficiency in rail transportation. He most recently served as director, Logistics Development/Rail for Stora Enso North America in Des Plaines, IL. Prior to joining Stora Enso, he had been VP Sales & Marketing for Nexus Distribution, Schaumburg, IL, since 1997.
Mr. McGonigle began his railroad career in Philadelphia, PA in 1973 in the operating department of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (now CSX). He subsequently joined the Milwaukee Road's Philadelphia sales office in 1976, was promoted and transferred to Chicago headquarters in 1978, where he progressed through various Sales and Marketing roles. Following Soo Line's acquisition of the Milwaukee Road in 1985, he advanced to director Marketing for the Lake States Division, which was sold to Wisconsin Central Ltd. in 1987. Mr. McGonigle was director Marketing for WC from 1987 to 1997 with responsibility for all commodities related to the paper industry.
Gaynor L. Ryan, Vice President Human Resources
Ms. Ryan began her railroad career in 1994, when she accepted a position with the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad System in the role of Customer Service Representative. She subsequently held the positions of Traffic Clerk, Information Services Specialist and Assistant Manager Personnel & IS for the B&A. She joined MMA in January 2003 as Manager of Human Resources, became Director of Human Resources in 2003, and was then promoted to Vice President of Human Resources in 2004.
Ms. Ryan has a strong customer service background. She started her career at Fleet Bank of Maine when she was just out of high school and quickly worked her way through the ranks of Teller I, Teller II, Classroom Trainer, Senior Teller, Sales & Service Representative and Administrative Assistant in the Security Department. When she joined the B&A in 1994, she brought with her a wealth of customer service and human relations skills which have proven to be effective and gained her great success in the Human Resources field. Ms. Ryan has strong ties to the Bangor area and the communities of Hermon and Glenburn in particular. She grew up in Herman and attended Herman High School, is a past member of the Glenburn Planning Board, a Notary Public for the State of Maine, and works with non-profit organizations volunteering her time and valuable knowledge on many topics, including the railroad industry.
John W. Schultz , Vice President - Transportation
Mr. Schultz began his railroad career in 1970 while still in high school and college working as a section laborer, clerk and switchman for the former Milwaukee Road. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for two years prior to joining the Missouri Pacific (now Union Pacific) at Kansas City, Mo., where he served as assistant trainmaster and trainmaster. He was promoted to manager Yard/Industry Operations at San Antonio, Texas in 1987 and became manager Transportation Planning at Omaha in 1990.
Mr. Schultz has more than 30 years of railroad experience, most recently as director Transportation Services for the Union Pacific Railroad at Denver, Colo. He previously held a similar post with the UP at Cheyenne, Wyo. from 1994 to 2004.
Mr. Schultz holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
Melody A. Sheahan, Vice President Engineering
Ms. Sheahan began her career in 1979 and has achieved much recognition in the industry, including ACRW Woman of the Year in 2001 and 1992, as well as being elected twice as President of the American Council of Railroad Women. She also served on the Board of Directors of the American Council of Railroad Women, from 1984-1992, 1997-2003, and 2005 to present.
Ms. Sheahan earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration at Marshall University, Huntington, W. VA and a MBA in Finance and Statistics from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. She also has an A.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from the University of Cincinnati. Ms. Sheahan's previous rail experience was in the Engineering departments at CSX Transportation and Amtrak from 1979 - 1997, where she was Senior Manager - Maintenance, Planning and Integration; and Director of Special Projects from 1997 to 2001. She subsequently was President and General Manager at On Track-On Line, a railroad consulting firm based in McMurray, PA.
